L'association C-E-A « commissaires d'exposition associés » a été créée en octobre 2007. Son objet est de constituer une plateforme de réflexion, de promotion et d'organisation d'activités autour de l'identité professionnelle du commissaire d'exposition.

Depuis une quinzaine d'années le nombre de commissaires d'exposition s'est accru tant en France qu'au plan international. Les commissaires sont maintenant invités à travailler de manière permanente ou ponctuelle avec des institutions publiques (musées, centres d'art, Frac ...), des lieux privés (galeries, fondations, entreprises) ou pour des collectivités territoriales (biennales, festivals, événements). Dans le même temps, des formations spécialisées ont vu le jour. Alors même que la profession tend à se développer dans le champ de l'art contemporain, le métier de commissaire n'a pas d'existence sociale, ni fiscale strictement définie.

L'association souhaite mener un travail de réflexion permettant de mieux circonscrire cette pratique, de mieux cerner ses différents besoins  et ses modalités d'exercice afin de mettre en place des actions de soutien à cette activité : résidences, bourses de recherche, aide à la production de projets.

L’association est présente au bureau du Congrès International des Professionnels de l’Art Contemporain et reçoit le soutien de l’AICA - France.

c-e-a (the French association for curators) is an association based in Paris (France). It was founded in October 2007 as a platform dedicated to discussing, promoting and organizing events and projects related to the professional identity of curators.

Since the mid-1980s the number of curators has considerably grown in France and internationally. Curators are now invited to work in various contexts, on short or long-term bases with institutions, art centers, galleries, etc. Moreover, many specialized curatorial programs have been created. c-e-a was born in the paradoxical context of the acknowledgment of this profession while it has no administrative or social definition.

The association’s aim is to generate a group reflection about this practice, and to define it in order to better identify its needs so as to create forms of support for curators: residencies, research and production grants. The association’s activity is firstly related to the specific French context, strongly lacking this type of support, and is open to international dialogue and networking.

Since its creation in 2007, c-e-a has initiated several projects, led by specific workshops:

- a sociological survey, established with a team of sociologists, to tentatively define the “population” concerned

- a symposium  (March 10, 2009) to make these results public

- a “vademecum”, an introduction to a guide defining the curator’s status

- a list of places offering documentary resources for the members of c-e-a in France

- a collaboration with the Cnap (National arts center) for the creation of specific grants

- a wiki website dedicated to source materials about curators and exhibition-making

More projects are being discussed for the close future, including the possibility to offer legal counseling to the members of c-e-a.
